Whether you’re completely new to yoga or returning after time away, Iyengar Yoga offers a clear, supportive and progressive approach to learning.

1. Clear instructions and step-by-step learning Iyengar Yoga teachers break down postures with precision and clarity, so you understand what you’re doing and why. Learning yoga is no different from learning to cook, speak a new language, draw, or play an instrument: clear guidance and step-by-step learning build confidence, understanding and satisfaction. This is one of the strengths of the Iyengar method. Rather than simply being told to “do what you can,” you’re taught how to approach a posture, how to work with your body, and how to progressively develop your practice.

2. Build strength, flexibility and focus gradually Iyengar Yoga isn’t about rushing through sequences or forcing a particular shape. Our classes are taught without music, so you can focus on your own experience rather than following someone else’s rhythm — and settle into a more meditative state. Instead, the practice emphasises alignment, stability, precision and mindful progression. There’s no magic pill, but over time this approach can lead to meaningful improvements in posture, mobility, strength, balance and breathing — while also building concentration and body awareness.

3. A thoughtful and adaptable approach Iyengar Yoga suits people of every fitness level, flexibility, age and experience. The human body is complex, and everybody is unique: you can be young and stiff, athletic and unfocused, flexible yet unstable — every combination is possible. Over these 10 weeks, you’ll come to understand when and why certain variations work better for you. Because Iyengar teacher training is so extensive, our teachers know how to adapt poses and use props to meet different needs. This is especially valuable if you’re dealing with stiffness, recovering from an injury, returning to exercise, or simply feeling tired or stressed. The aim isn’t to force the body into a posture, but to learn how to work safely and intelligently within it.

4. Feel the benefits of regular practice You don’t need years of practice to notice a difference. With regular practice, beginners often experience: •a stronger, more balanced body •improved posture and mobility •greater body awareness •a calmer, more focused mind •reduced stress and tension •better quality of sleep Even a few weeks of consistent practice can change the way you feel in your body and move through your day.

5. Props make yoga accessible — and challenging Blocks, belts, bolsters, chairs and blankets are an integral part of the Iyengar method. They’re intelligent tools that help you understand and experience postures more fully. Props make a posture more accessible or appropriate for different bodies, flexibility levels, strengths, ages and experience — allowing you to work progressively and with greater precision. They can also build awareness of a specific body part, joint or muscle, making the practice more effective.
